Data Protection Policy

(Enquires about data protection: datenschutz@bethechange.swiss)

We take the protection of your personal data very seriously, and we treat them in confidence and in accordance with statutory provisions. As a rule, it is possible to use our website without providing personal data.

Cookies

Our website uses cookies in order to offer you a superior user experience. Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer by your browser. They do not contain any malicious code.

Hosting provider and server log files

Our website provider automatically collects and stores information in what are known as server log files, which your browser automatically transmits to us. The information includes:

  • Your IP address
  • The type and version of your browser
  • The operating system that you are using
  • The referrer URL
  • The host name of the computer being used to access our website
  • The time of day of the server request

These data cannot be directly attributed to a specific person, nor are they combined with other data sources. We reserve the right to examine these data at a later date if we become aware of specific indications of unlawful use. These data, and all data on this website, are stored by our hosting provider cyon GmbH, Brunngässlein 12, 4052 Basel, Switzerland, whose Privacy Policy can be found here.

SSL encryption

This website uses SSL encryption for reasons of security and in order to protect the transmission of confidential content, such as enquiries that you send to us as the website operator. You can tell that a connection is encrypted if your browser’s address bar changes from “http://” to “https://” and a lock symbol is displayed in your browser’s status bar. If SSL encryption is activated, the data that you transmit to us cannot be read by third parties.

Newsletter data

If you would like to subscribe to our newsletter, we require your e-mail address and your consent to the receipt of the newsletter. We use these data solely for sending the newsletter. You may at any time withdraw your consent to the storage of your e-mail address and its use for sending the newsletter by clicking on the “Unsubscribe” link in the newsletter. We employ what is known as a double opt-in procedure in order to subscribe to our newsletter.

That means that after subscribing, you will receive an e-mail requesting that you confirm your subscription. This confirmation is necessary so that no one can subscribe using a sham e-mail address. Newsletter subscriptions are logged in order to be able to demonstrate that the subscription process is in conformity with legal requirements. This includes storing the time of the subscription and the confirmation as well as the IP address. In addition, the changes to your data that are stored by Mailchimp are logged.

Mailchimp

The newsletter is sent using Mailchimp, a US-based online marketing platform operated by The Rocket Science Group, LLC, 675 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, Suite 5000, Atlanta, GA 30308, USA. The e-mail addresses of our newsletter subscribers and their other data described in this notice are stored on Mailchimp servers in the USA. Mailchimp uses this information for the purpose of sending and analysing the newsletter on our behalf. According to Mailchimp, it may also use these data for the purpose of optimising and improving its services, for example for technically optimising the way the newsletter is sent and displayed, and for commercial purposes in order to determine the countries in which subscribers are located.

However, Mailchimp does not use the data of our newsletter subscribers in order to write to them directly, nor does it disclose these data to third parties. We are confident that Mailchimp is trustworthy and provides adequate IT and data security. Mailchimp is certified under the EU–US Privacy Shield Framework and accordingly undertakes to comply with EU data protection requirements. In addition, we concluded a data-processing agreement with Mailchimp. Under this agreement, Mailchimp undertakes to protect the data of our users, to process them on our behalf in accordance with its Privacy Policy, and, in particular, to refrain from disclosing them to third parties. You can view Mailchimp’s Privacy Policy here.

Collection and analysis for statistical purposes

Newsletters contain a web beacon, which is a pixel-sized file that is retrieved by the Mailchimp server when the newsletter is opened. When the web beacon is retrieved, technical information is initially collected, such as information about your browser and operating system as well as your IP address and the time of access. This information is used for the purpose of making technical improvements to the services on the basis of technical data or the target groups and their reading behaviour based on their places of access (which can be determined with the aid of the IP address) or times of access.

Also collected for statistical purposes is the determination of whether newsletters are opened and, if so, when, and which links were clicked on. For technical reasons, this information may be allocated to individual newsletter subscribers, but neither we nor Mailchimp endeavour to monitor individual users. Rather, we perform analyses in order to identify the reading habits of our users and then tailor our content to those habits, or to send different content that matches their interests.

Cancellation/withdrawal

You may cancel your subscription to our newsletter at any time by withdrawing your consent. This simultaneously results in the deletion of your consent to the sending of the newsletter via Mailchimp and to the performing of statistical analyses. It is not possible to separately withdraw consent to the sending of the newsletter via Mailchimp or to the performing of statistical analyses. You can find a link at the end of each newsletter for unsubscribing.

Legal bases under the General Data Protection Regulation

In accordance with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which has been in force since 25 May 2018, we hereby inform you that consent to the sending of the newsletter is given on the basis of Article 6(1)(a) and Article 7 of the GDPR. Use of the newsletter marketing service Mailchimp, collection and analysis of data for statistical purposes, and logging of the subscription procedure take place on the basis of our legitimate interests in accordance with Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR. Our interest is directed towards the employment of a secure, user-friendly newsletter system that both serves our business interests and meets the expectations of users.
