Asked: Swiss beach volleyball pro Tanja Hüberli

The 28-year-old Swiss beach volleyball player and BTC athlete gives an insight into her life as a professional in the «Asked» interview, and the 2019 World Cup fourth-place finisher reveals how she recovers best and the role BE THE CHANGE plays in this.

How do you feel when you’re away from the sand?

I actually don’t like going barefoot at all except when I’m in the sand. A lot of people love to go barefoot through the meadows—not me, I just don’t get it! Even at home, I usually wearing slippers or at least thick socks.

What’s your greatest strength on the court?

I want to win, no matter what, and I’ll fight to the end. I’m always ready to work hard on myself and I’m always open to new things!

What’s your favorite memory as a professional player?

Our top achievement was definitely the fourth-place ranking at the World Championships. The week right after that, when we went straight back to the semi-finals at our favorite tournament in Gstaad, was my favorite time, emotionally. We just really enjoyed playing in front of friends, family, and fans and the atmosphere was unbelievable — total goosebumps!


What’s your favorite sports product from BTC and why?

I’ve started eating the porridge for breakfast before tourneys and I love it! And I could drink the Chocolate Crunch Protein Drink every day. I love chocolate and, with those crispies, it goes down almost like dessert. 😉

What do you eat on a training day?

I start the day with warm porridge. It does me good to start the day with something warm. Midday and evenings I make sure to have balanced meals with protein, fats, and carbohydrates. If I’ve had a really intense workout, sometimes I’ll add a protein shake.

How do you recover most effectively?

With filling and healthy meals, sufficient sleep, and some active recovery like stretching, blackrole, going out on the bike, etc..

After a game/training/tournament, the first thing I do is…

Right after a game I always have a Regeneration Shake Swiss Chocolate Crunch to replenish my stores and get ready for the next game.

Aside from beach volleyball, what are you most into?

I’m studying at PH Bern (Editor’s note: the teacher’s university there). Apart from that, I’m generally a curious person who likes to learn new things that’ll further my career as an athlete, so I like to read informational books or exciting biographies.

What role does sustainability play in your life?

I consider sustainability whenever possible. I practically don’t use plastic bags at all anymore and I also try to avoid producing garbage. I’ll gladly pay a little more for sustainable products and food from sustainable sources.

Let us in on a little secret that no one knows about life as a beach-volleyball player.

Well, traveling a lot isn’t actually as much fun as it sounds, because we rarely see much of the area, just the airport and the tournament location. And we play a lot of tourneys in cities, not always at some exotic beach.

What is your next goal?

The Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo this year is our biggest goal. We’re giving it our all, so that we can show our best side and maybe write a summer fairy tale.
